Cologne is a great shopping haven! No other Rhineland city makes shopping quite as much fun as it is here. The choice is huge, and not only in the city center. The various quarters, known in Cologne as "Veedel", have great shopping areas with that flair so typical of Cologne.
|
In the heart of the Sdstadt is Severinstrae, a street so typical of Cologne with its retail stores, greengrocers and snack bars, clothes shops and gift boutiques. The area around St. Severin's Church and the Severinstor (Severin's Gate) is colorful and cosmopolitan.

Hohe Strae/Schildergasse |
Hohe Strae is one of the oldest pedestrian zones in Europe and, along with Schildergasse, connects the Cathedral and Neumarkt (New Market). Shop 'til you drop in the city's premiere shopping area. Here you will find all the well-known fashion chain stores, department stores, smart boutiques and jeans stores. There is something for every taste and budget as the selection is quite staggering. You can also rest your tired feet in one of the numerous bistros, cafs and pubs generally located in the side streets.

Here in the heart of the city, you will
find the shopping malls Olivandenhof,
Neumarkt-Passage and the recently completed Neumarkt-Galerie. Two large
bookstores, boutiques, modern furniture stores, shoe shops, galleries and haute
cuisine all create a marvellous, quality blend in inspired and pleasant
surroundings. Neumarkt is even worth visiting when the weather is poor!

WDR-Arkaden und Schweizer Ladenstadt (WDR Arcade and Swiss Mall) |
Located in Breitestrae, the WDR-Arkaden offers culinary delights, art and gifts in most unusual surroundings: you can watch the "WDR-Lokalzeit" radio and television hosts and the "Maus" and the "Elefant" (Mouse and Elephant, two animated television characters) at work. Less than 100 meters further down the street you will find the Schweizer Ladenstadt (Swiss Mall), Europe's oldest covered shopping centre with its broad array of colorful stores.

Cologne's hip and trendy stores can be found on this street in the Friesenviertel
(Friesian Quarter). The city's "in" people shop here at the fashion boutiques, jeans
and second-hand stores, using the opportunity to "see and be seen". Small gift
shops, record and bookstores sell funky and unique goodies and one-offs.
Cologne's in-scene celebrities can be found relaxing in the numerous cafés.
|
Hohenstaufen-/Hohenzollernring |
The Ring (ring road around the centre of Cologne) is busy both day and night.
During opening hours, the numerous smart furniture stores and designer shops
offer top-quality products from all over the world. In addition to numerous
restaurants, cafés and bistros, visit one of the many hairdressing salons,
perfumeries or drugstores.
|
Drener Strae is a shopping street at the centre of a very distinguished residential area. Smart boutiques, posh leather stores and gift shops coupled with numerous cafs and restaurants characterise this charming quarter. Note: no pedestrian zone!
|
Cologne Central Station/"Colonaden" |
Following the DM 200 million remodelling of Cologne's Central Station, the new interior hall has become a gourmet and shopping temple. Snack bars, restaurants and cafs offer refuge for weary travelers, but the selection of approx. 65 emporia also includes supermarkets, drugstores, photographic and gift shops. What makes shopping here so special are the opening hours from Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.
|
Mittel- und Pfeilstrae |
Cologne is also home to those exclusive designer labels — to be found in the posh boutiques on Mittelstrae. Even in the side streets, such as Pfeilstrae, designers offer their exquisite clothes, art and furniture.
|
Close to the trade fair grounds on the so-called "Schl Sick" (right-hand side of the Rhine), there is yet another pedestrian zone: Deutzer Freiheit. Clothes, art and kitsch, but also cafs and pubs characterise this traditional shopping street.
|
Young people in particular do their shopping in Nippes. In the course of the last few years, Neusser Strasse has developed into one of the liveliest shopping streets in this "Veedel" (Quarter). Furthermore, Cologne's oldest and largest market is held here every weekday morning. From inexpensive shoes, fashionable clothing through to organic bread, quality vegetables and fruit, Nippes simply has everything to offer.
