Carbon Expo 2013 announces key speakers
Barcelona, May, 2013 - Carbon Expo is bringing together an impressive list of speakers to celebrate its 10th anniversary this spring. It continues to be the leading annual global carbon market conference and trade fair, providing participants with in-depth analysis of current trends in greenhouse gas mitigation and climate policy developments. Carbon Expo will take place May 29-31 at Fira de Barcelona's Montjuïc venue.
Today, the carbon market finds itself at a crossroads, with carbon prices in existing markets at a historic low, not helped by the international political debate regarding an uncertain future regulatory framework. Stakeholders and market participants demand structural changes within the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) ¿ the backbone of Europe's climate policy ¿ while a reduced country participation in the Kyoto Protocol's second commitment period translates into a low demand for carbon emission reductions and provides little incentive for new low-carbon investments.
At the same time, carbon pricing initiatives at regional, national, and sub-national levels are emerging worldwide, and innovative ideas are reshaping the fight against climate change. However, challenges such as mobilizing private funds and coping with fragmented mitigation initiatives lie ahead. This makes the dialogue between government representatives, the private sector, international organizations and civil society at Carbon Expo all the more important.
Carbon Expo 2013 provides the opportunity to discuss existing and emerging climate finance initiatives, the role of market-based emission reductions, and other low-carbon approaches to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. More than 200 speakers will gather in Barcelona at the end of May, offering a unique platform to major players of a green economy to discuss solutions for sustainable growth. But as always, the real magic of Carbon Expo is in the contacts delegates make with other market pioneers - it is a perfect time to take stock of where we have been, and of the new horizons we need to explore.
"Despite current challenges, the carbon market remains a vital tool in the greater fight against climate change. Good work is being done globally in the form of domestic climate legislation and emerging trading schemes, but more conversations are needed to discuss issues like private sector engagement, the global linking of schemes, and quality across systems. Carbon Expo provides a fantastic platform to conduct these types of discussions, which will aid in the recovery and continued success of the markets", says Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Key speakers participating in Carbon Expo this year include:
- Miguel Arias Cañete, Spain's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment

World Bank, IETA and Fira de Barcelona, a successful partnership
The World Bank Group and IETA are two important actors in the carbon market. In 2000, the World Bank was the first institution to develop global carbon funds as a public/private partnership and has gone on to create a whole family of funds and facilities designed to support carbon initiatives, reduce risk, and develop policy.
IETA is a non-profit business organization comprised of major companies and the leading voice of this community on emissions trading, whose goal is to ensure that the objectives of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and, ultimately, climate protection, are met. IETA upholds its principles by acting as a think tank, a facilitator of dialogue, an advocate, and acting as a body to implement market standards. IETA works for the development of an active, global greenhouse gas market, consistent across national boundaries. The World Bank and IETA have chosen to join forces with Fira de Barcelona, Spain's leading trade show organizer, to organize Carbon Expo in Barcelona every two years.
